Relatives of four people shot to death in Virginia Beach city offices in 2019 traveled to the state Capitol on Wednesday to press for a $40 million award from the state, saying the city has failed to provide for the families of the 12 people killed and the municipal employees physically and emotionally scarred by the massacre.
The city cut off their medical and mental health benefits just before the second anniversary of the May 31, 2019, shooting.
The family has now sent a demand letter requesting $10 million from Arlington County Public Schools.
Harris died nearly two years ago, on March 26, 2021. Police say she was hit by a stray bullet the same night a police officer shot and killed Donovon Lynch.
Lynch was shot and killed by Solomon Simmons, a Virginia Beach police officer, but his body camera wasn’t turned on when the shooting happened.
